Starting in 1958, CASE made a Model 1 Astronaut Survival Knife for NASA moon-landing Apolo Program. Over time, M-1 knives were flown on all of NASA's Apollo, Gemini, Skylab, and ASTP missions. One of these "Apolo mission knives" is actually on display in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, in addition to several other museums around the country.
The M-1 is a giant survival knife that resembles a machete, except for the very aggressive saw teeth on the spine and a special super-light opaque polypropylene handle scales - this type of plastic does not give off fumes. Also, the lower edge near the handle is blunt, so an astronaut would have less of a chance of cutting the spacesuit's glove. In 1983 Case had the 25-yr anniversary of the original 1958. Commemorative issue which was limited to just 1000 serialized knives.
